Elounda is a large and lively Cretan village, its main square is the center of resort life, lined with a wide variety of shops, tavernas and bars looking out onto the harbour. Roads from the square lead out to the fish tavernas of neighbouring Plaka or the bustling streets of Aghios Nicolaos, 10km away. Just beyond the square there's a sandy beach that's purpose built for sunbathing and watersports which is regulary awarded a Blue Flag for it's cleanliness. Along the rocky shoreline are several pebble coves - perfect for crystal clear snorkelling.
The Olive Grove is situated very centrally near the church, 2 mins walk from the square and beach but secluded enough to be in a calm and peaceful location.
You can take relaxing strolles through the old villages of Pano Horio, Kato Horio and Mavrikiano and see the amazing scenery also there are boat trips daily to Spinalonga . This is an island just of the coast of Plaka which was once a Venetian Fortress and later a leper colony. Most recently it's the setting for the best seller The Island. The latest news is they will be making a film version of the book within the next couple of years.
Elounda is a recognised archaelogical sight. Across the causeway past salt flats where salt was collected and exported about 40 years ago: visitors can admire relics of the sunken city of Olous and the Dolfin mosaic near the Canal Bar.
